Business is filled with situations that can easily be turned into problems if they are not met with a proper solution. In some cases, it’s as simple as changing a course of action, but some problems are deep-rooted and need to be addressed aggressively. Technology can often be a business’ saving grace in such instances.
Let’s review some really bad scenarios that could be catastrophic, unless the right IT is in place.
Scenario 1: Data Loss
Let’s get one thing straight: data loss is never a good thing. Without data, a modern business is effectively dead in the water.
Of course, the fact that so many situations can lead to data loss makes it so dangerous. Cyberattacks, natural disasters, and good old-fashioned hardware failure can all create a data loss event, which in turn can set your business back considerably.
How Technology Can Help:
Fortunately, modern businesses can—and very much should and need to—utilize modern data backup practices to ensure their data is redundantly preserved so a copy is always available to them, if only to fall back on if needed. Cloud technology offers an excellent means of saving these copies safely and securely, isolating them from whatever caused the initial data loss.
We always recommend that a backup align with the 3-2-1 Data Backup Rule, which dictates that there are always at least three copies of a business’ data being maintained, in at least two different locations, at least one of these locations being offsite (ideally, in the cloud). Doing so can significantly reduce the lasting impact of local data loss on a business.
Scenario 2: No Access to Business Accounts
Passwords can be tricky to keep straight… particularly if a user abides by recommended best practices and uses a unique one for each account, as everyone should. Unfortunately, with more and more accounts being added to the average user’s roster all the time, that means that the average user is now expected to memorize dozens of random strings of alphanumeric characters and remember them perfectly on command.
Not exactly realistic… which is why so many people defy best practice and stick to using just one across all their accounts.
How Technology Can Help:
Fortunately, modern password managers can assist users in maintaining these standards by securely storing all the credentials they need in encrypted vaults, accessible via one master password—effectively reducing the number of passwords a user needs to remember to one while still enabling them to maintain proper password hygiene.
We always recommend that a standalone password manager be used over one built into a web browser, simply because they are more secure and more easily accessed and utilized by the authorized parties using it.
Scenario 3: No Access to Business Location
It wasn’t all that long ago that the whole world suddenly shut down, leaving many businesses in a tight spot. While it simply wasn’t safe for their employees to come into the office, they also needed to be there to keep the business running. In the past, this would have made it impossible for many businesses to survive, and with no shortage of disasters that could potentially have this same effect, many businesses haven’t as the years have gone by. From global health crises to floods and fires to severe weather, there’s plenty that can keep a team out of the office and away from their tools.
How Technology Can Help:
We’ve referenced the cloud once already, and we can do so again here as it can facilitate remote operations for modern businesses should working in the traditional office become unsafe or impractical. By leveraging the Internet as a means of connecting to shared resources maintained by a larger provider, cloud options are often the best means for a business to gain access to a variety of services, whether that’s software tools, data storage, or effectively any other computing need… all while giving their team more flexibility to operate in different situations and opening the door to remote work.
